Boogie Nights (1997)

Easily one of my top ten and "dealbreaker" movies, Boogie Nights.  A lot was shot in Reseda, most notably the opening sequence....

Screenshots....

The donut store featured in the end of the movie is just up the street...

Screenshots...

The stereo store, but barely recognizable..

Screenshots...

Dirk's parent's house...

Except for the cars, not a thing has changed in the screenshots...

Area where Dirk is walking around in his documentary...

Screenshots...

Dirk's new house, thanks to Chas for finding this....

The motel where the deal is worked out....

The drug dealer house... I was challenged to find this and initially thought it may be up in the hills, but couldn't find it.   The house number on the house in the movie is actually fabricated, which happens less often than you think, but it did throw me off.   So, I got out my bluray copy of the movie and as the characters run away, I was able to read a cross street sign on a corner and was able to backtrack the location all the way in Encino...

Screenshots...

And finally.... Jack Horner's house.   (Thanks to Chas for tracking down the address.)  The house is a bit difficult to find as it is very obscured by trees and shrubbery.   At first, I stood on a ledge to try to get some shots of the backyard which turned out okay.   Then me and my friend James pulled up in the driveway to get some shots of the front of the house.  The owner was home and we politely asked if we could take some pictures of his house.   He said sure, and I think he thought we were film scouts, but he let us in to take some pictures as well!

  1. That movie is sure a classic. Good job on finding the locations. I really want Jack Horner aka Burt Reynolds house in the movie. I love 1970's decor like that. Very cool how the owner maintains it very nicely and has kept it all original. I'm sure there is a ton of upkeep on that yard and pool. Very very cool!

  2. I am so jealous you guys went to Jack Horners house. I grew up in the valley and know where most of the locations are out here. This one takes the cake though. I know it is in West Covina, PTA mentions it in the commentary. Nice work guys, great finds. Glad to know there are fellow Boogie Nights geeks out there!

  3. Thanks, we lucked out and the owners were MORE than generous to let us in and get those great shots!

  4. "Boogie Nights" is on as I write this! Was curious about Jack Horner's house, searched online, and... BAM! Found your site! I love that 70s decor and architecture so these pics are sweet. And it is so cool the owners let you in! To bad the tikki bar isn't still in the back yard. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Thanks, Russ. It was an awesome location to visit and very lucky the owners invited us in! As always, it was strange to step right "into the set" that I saw so many times on screen.

  6. Gaahhh! Years ago, I spent hours on google maps looking for this house. Major props to Chas for the find and naturally to you too for getting inside. My plans have been to make a diaroma and it's been a lot of work sketching the layout of this house with only PTA's tracking shots. CHAMPION!

  7. Great find guys! That home was probably like trying to find a needle in a haystack
I recently re-discovered "Boogie Nights" and my partner and I have been wathing it over and over like junkies who can't get enough of PTA's chracters.
I used to live in Covina and had friends who lived in houses like that.
The set decorators did an awesome job with the foilage and the big oleander bushes they added to the patio/pool area.
They gave it that secluded and decadent 70's vibe that I remembered when I used to go over to these friend's houses to swim in their pools, all the while envying them for having such cool houses.

  9. I love your site. Thanks for all the work to put it together. Can you list the actual addresses please.
Also, is the 'parents House' anywhere near Marty McFly's house at 9303 Roslyndale Ave , Arleta, CA?

  10. The Reseda Theatre is at 18447 in Sherman Way, and the discotech is next door at 18419 Sherman Way in Reseda. Also right down the street is the donut shop at 18231 Sherman Way.

Dirk's parents house is actually pretty far from the McFly house, it is in Torrance at 3503 W 187th Street. Dirk's new house is at 4214 Lobos Road. The drug dealer's hous is nearby in Encino at 16804 Encino Hills Drive.

Way out in Covina is Jack Horner's house at 19519 Cameron Street.

  14. Do you know where the store is where Dirk, Reed and Scotty J bought their clothes?

Also have you had a chance to go to Du-Pars?

    1. I have not been inside Du-Pars restaurant, although I've been by it many times. I have not researched the store, but will look into it when I have time or maybe a reader here knows....

    2. Oh, MAN, I'd forgotten about the clothing store. I'd LOVE to know where that was. I've just rewatched that scene several times, and you can make out a Dentist, and Insurance office, and some kind of automobile business across the street. There an address that seems to begin with a 18xxx, but it's hard to make out.

I just rewatched the scene several times again--and you can make out a dentists office, an insurance office, and some kind of auto store. There's a 5-digit address visible--but it's hard to make out. 18xxx?

    4. Oh, Jeez...now you've done it! You're right--I've never seen the clothing store location identified. I've gone back and looked at the scene several times, and you can make out "Dentistry" and "Insurance"...and a 5-digit address (?) across the street.

    5. Thought of another scene we don't have a location for: The bank (interior-only--that makes it more difficult!) where Buck tries in vain to get a loan for "Super Stereo World". There are probably other interior-only shots, too. Amber's failed meeting with the judge and her ex-husband? The Colonel's jail cell? Etc, etc...

Where can we find the location manager for this movie?! ;-)

(Again, sorry for the multiple posts. It's impossible to tell when a reply has been submitted successfully!)

    6. Will keep a look out for those locations. All post have to be approved before they show up, FYI.

  15. Cool, thanx. I made a Boogie Nights Google map based on the addresses you provided. Check it out. You can barely see Jack Horner's house from the street so I used the location on that side road that runs by the house.

If you ever learn of additional locations, like where Dirk and Reed were on the roof filming "Angels Live in my Town"... I can add them in.

  16. PT Anderson's childhood home backs up to the bridge off Colfax. His childhood home is on the southwest corner of Troost and Dilling St in Studio City. I purchased the Boogie Nights screenplay and there is a scene that was written, but not filmed, that takes place right after Dirk's Vet runs out of gas. Dirk looks at a street sign that says Troost and he realizes he's in his old neighborhood. I figured that the street was significant to Paul. I coupled that information with a couple of Ernie Anderson vids I had seen on YouTube where they show Ernie walking around the outside of his house and from Google Maps you can tell its Ernie's old family home. That house should be declared a national landmark. The idea of Boogie Nights, in embryonic form, was spawned in that house!!!!

    1. Thanks for this heads-up. I visited the L.A. River pedestrian bridge there at Colfax recently, and thanks to your comment, made sure I (politely and discreetly) peeked through the gate at the former Anderson home. I had no idea those two spots were so close together. No WONDER the director was so familiar with it! ;-)

  17. Wow! Very cool post and comment thread. And I thought I was a big Boogie Nights fan....

To the previous commenter: yes, Dirk Diggler is in some ways a surrogate for PT Anderson himself. Particularly the issues with his mom...

Classic movie, had a huge impact on me as I could relate to a lot of the themes.

But the million dollar question still remains: where the FUCK is Ringo?

  18. Nice to see there are some other Boogie Nights Nerds out there! How extremely awesome that you got to go inside "Jack's" place! [envy] I live in the Valley so most of these spots would be fairly easy to make a pilgrimage to. (I still can't get over Dirk riding the bus from Torrance to Reseda!) And Mega Kudos to the dude who mapped all of the locations onto Google Maps--I just did the same thing...for fun! :-D

  19. It's fun reading the final draft of the script. It's about 95% close to what PTA actually shot. http://sfy.ru/?script=boogie_nights Wonder if he actually shot the scenes in this script that never made it to the final version?

  20. Found a version of the final draft of the script online. Wonder if PTA actually shot the scenes in the script that didn't make it into the final cut of the film? http://sfy.ru/?script=boogie_nights

  23. Roberts, congrats on such a cool "Boogie Nights" post. It's inspired me to visit all these locations myself (wonder if the current residents of Jack's place would be as accomodating to me as they were to you?!).

I've noticed this otherwise quite thorough post is missing a couple of shots: The Hot Traxx nightclub, Dirk's Mugging...

It's been fascinating--and a little depressing: It's been almost 20 years since the movie was shot, and it's amazing how much some things have changed. (I think L.A. is infamous for tearing down "landmarks".)

For example, the brick building where Dirk was mugged has been torn down in the last 6 months. I went by there in Oct, 2014 and it was intact; a revisit this week showed that it was gone! They're also completely remodeling Dirk's Pad's kitchen, and tearing off some of the redwood siding on the front...

Here's a link to an album of some shots I've taken recenty:

    http://s202.photobucket.com/user/wilberfan/library/Boogie%20Nights%20Filming%20Locations

I hope someone, somewhere, someday can locate the clothing store, the bank, and Brock Lander's rooftop locations!

Thanks again for such a fabulous resource!

  24. I just realized your "after" photo of Buck's Stereo Store was the wrong side of the building. The actual space was on the "back" side--in the rear parking area (off the alley): http://bit.ly/1ST4Mce

  25. Wow, great work man. I was able to read the sign on the drug dealer's street too, but they actually changed the numbers... no wonder I couldn't ever find it! There's another location you are missing, the church where Dirk gets beat up... St. Catherine's of Siena Church on Sherman Way, also used in "Auto Focus". UNBELIEVABLE that you got to go inside Jack Horner's house. So cool! DuPar's is a must visit... on Ventura Blvd, right down the street from the El Royale.

    1. Thanks, in all my trips I'm not sure why I never got a shot of the church. Definitely need to hit up DuPar's on one of my trips too.

  27. Great work on highlighting the different locations. Unfortunately, the house used for Rahad Jackson's home is no longer there. It was demolished during the past year, so unfortunately fans won't see the one used in the movie. A new 2-story house was being built this week when I visited.
