Check out the all new FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER page at Set-Jetter.com!
Alrighty, this is a big-deal location for me. At 14-years-old, the first horror movie I ever saw in a theatre was Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. I had not seen any of the previous ones, but me and my best friend thought this was our only chance to see a Friday the 13th on the big screen since it would be the last one (ha ha). Although I should have been a bit more brave at that age, I was scared to death. In fact, I only remember seeing the bottom portion of the opening credits because I was hiding my eyes!
The series was at its prime and the audience loved it... cheering, screaming, yelling at the screen. But that day changed movies for me; I was astounded that images and sounds from the screen could have such an effect on me and the audience. It was then I understood the power of film, and nothing has been the same for me since. Below are links to my visits to other locales in the series:
Friday the 13th Part III
Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
I'm going to do this blog entry a little differently and do the locations more on a scene-by-scene basis. This will be a long one, folks! First up, mom and Trish come home from a job and chat with Tommy in the kitchen....

I'm in the mood for... a Jarvis sandwich!

Gordon, do you have a girlfriend or something?

As most fans know, the house the kids rent across the way was a facade built for the film and then torn down....

Don't forget 6AM, once around the lake...

Trish, Tommy, and Rob arrive at the Jarvis house...

Trish and Tommy come home and look for mom in her room, but she's never gone this long and in the rain. (FYI, this is actually Tommy's room redressed)....

Jason throws a hammer at Trish; the filmmakers sure did a lot of damage to this house!

Tommy and Trish retreat into his room... What's he doing??

Jason gets knocked out....

But soon awakens....
Trish runs back to the other house....

And my favorite Jason, Ted White...
Okay, the fantastic lady I need to thank for all of this, Sally Young!
Sally is the new owner of Black Berry Creek Farm at Kelly Gulch. The property is open for filming, weddings, and special events. If you are interested in renting the property she can be contacted at peatydink@gmail.com or check out more photos of the property at http://kellygulch.com/. It is truly a beautiful place. However, I must stress to fans that this is still private property and trespassing without permission is not allowed.
UPDATE: Not sure why it's taken me a year to get to this update, but here are few more locations from the film. Some of the drive to the house was shot in Topanga Canyon, but a lot was shot on the figure-eight loop around the Franklin Canyon Reservoir. Below is an area, also used in Freddy's Dead, where you can see them round the bend with a small house in the background...
Screenshots....
The next few scenes are a little more difficult to track down the exact spot. Both the grave of Pamela Voorhees and the hitchhiker scene were shot on the same road. But over thirty years of growth has hampered the ability to find the exact spot, but here are some that look pretty close...
Screenshots....
The production shot up in the Solvang area, specifically the Zaca Lake for the skinny dipping scene. For the raft scene at night, they shot at the Upper Franklin Canyon Reservoir....

Awesome post! I've seen that house in alot of stuff. I remember it from Murphy's Law with Charles Bronson. It was also in some movie with Tom Sizemore, cant remember the name. I've only seen a handful of locations in real life and it always feels so weird to actually be where something so cool was filmed!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes, this location has been in so many productions, it's hard to miss. This one was particularly weird to be inside after seeing the movie so many times during my younger days.
DeleteGreat Post. Going to be going through your site a lot between now and our Hollywood trip in May. Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteDId you just contact her to see if you could visit?
ReplyDeleteYes, I contacted and received permission.
DeleteAnd where is the house actually located?
ReplyDelete1801 North Topanga Canyon Boulevard
DeleteLove your work Robert! As a huge fan of the series, I've always wondered where exactly the lake scenes were filmed in Part 4. Do you know where?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder, I forgot I had to do some updates from last year. Zaca Lake was used for the skinny dipping scene during the day. The Upper Franklin Canyon Reservoir was used for the raft & dock death scenes at night, see photos above.
DeleteAre you sure the raft kills were at Franklin? I know there's no dock at Franklin Reservoir (perhaps they may have been one back then, or production put one in). Also the walls where they are swimming are kind of high and rocky and as far as I remember Franklin has no rocky cliffs. But then again in 30 years, it changes quite quickly.
ReplyDeleteYes, the raft kills were at the reservoir. The other dock & skinny dipping lake was up at Zaca.
DeleteHey horror fans! I’m the son of Ted White who portrayed “Jason” in Friday the 13th The Final Chapter. I finally got off my duff and wrote about the time my dad invited me to the set for one of the kill scenes and his private conversations between director, Joe Zito and effects guru Tom Savini. It’s a bloody and funny, crazy story and I was there to see it go down. I’ve told this story for years but have never written about it. He’s actually a stuntman who did a slue of Westerns and doubled for John Wayne in several of the Duke’s films. This story and many more from his career are now in a paperback compellation called “In The Shadows of Giants.” And the corpse didn’t fall far from the casket as I have had my own share of crazy stories to tell as well. Check it all out soon on Amazon and Kindle. You won’t be disappointed! Like our Facebook page to get notified of the launch! https://www.facebook.com/shadowsofgiants
